Answers to Your Questions

Yes. Postpartum depression can develop weeks or even several months after giving birth. While some women notice symptoms shortly after delivery, others begin to experience changes in mood, energy, or emotional well-being later in the postpartum period as they adjust to the ongoing demands of motherhood.

Postpartum depression may involve persistent sadness, increased anxiety, irritability, difficulty bonding with your baby, or feeling overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted. Because these symptoms can appear gradually, many mothers are unsure whether what they are experiencing is part of normal adjustment or something more.

Working with a postpartum depression therapist in Miami can help you better understand your symptoms and receive compassionate maternal mental health support during this important stage of postpartum recovery. Therapy can provide tools and guidance to help you feel more supported, emotionally balanced, and confident as a new mother.

Can postpartum depression start months after birth?

14

The Heard Counseling is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly. However, we provide a monthly statement (superbill) that you may submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement depending on your out-of-network mental health benefits.

Does The Heard Counseling & Coaching accept insurance?

13

Yes, many new mothers choose to bring their baby to therapy sessions, especially during the early postpartum months. Therapy is meant to support you during this stage of life, and accommodations can often be made to ensure sessions remain accessible and supportive for new parents.

If you have specific concerns about bringing your baby to a session, we can discuss options that help you feel comfortable and supported.

Can I bring my baby to my therapy sessions, or do I need to find a sitter?

12

Yes. Postpartum depression often includes physical exhaustion, sleep disruption, and nervous system overload. Therapy that includes somatic and mind-body approaches can help address both the emotional and physical effects of postpartum stress.

Through counseling, many mothers learn ways to support nervous system regulation and postpartum recovery, helping them feel more balanced, rested, and emotionally supported during early motherhood.

Can Dr. April help with the physical exhaustion and burnout I’m feeling as a new mom?

11

The length of counseling varies depending on your symptoms, goals, and level of support. Some women benefit from several months of therapy during the postpartum adjustment period, while others continue longer to support ongoing emotional well-being.

The goal of therapy is to help mothers develop lasting emotional resilience and confidence while navigating the challenges of postpartum recovery.

How long does postpartum depression counseling typically take?

10

Yes. The Heard Counseling specializes in therapy and counseling services for women in Miami, including support for maternal mental health, postpartum depression, and other life transitions. This focus enables the practice to understand better the unique emotional and physical experiences women may face during pregnancy and early motherhood.

Does The Heard only work with women?

09

Dr. April Brown provides maternal mental health counseling in Miami for women navigating the emotional challenges of early motherhood. Many new mothers come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of themselves during the postpartum period.

Through therapy, you will work together to understand the emotional and physical factors contributing to postpartum depression while developing strategies that support postpartum recovery, emotional steadiness, and renewed confidence as a mother.

How can Dr. April Brown help me manage the symptoms of PPD?

08

Traditional talk therapy focuses primarily on discussing thoughts and emotions. A holistic approach to postpartum depression counseling also considers how many different factors impact postpartum depression, including nutrition, sleep, movement, vitamin levels, hormonal imbalances, and gut health.

At The Heard Counseling, therapy may incorporate elements of somatic therapy for postpartum recovery, nervous system regulation for moms, and integrative maternal health. This approach recognizes that postpartum depression affects both emotional and physical well-being.

What is the difference between traditional talk therapy and a holistic approach to postpartum depression?

07

Yes. Many women experience anxiety during the postpartum period, sometimes alongside depression. The Heard Counseling provides support for postpartum anxiety as well.

You can learn more about this service here.

Therapy can help new mothers manage intrusive thoughts, overwhelming worry, and the physical symptoms of postpartum anxiety while building confidence in their role as a parent.

Do you offer postpartum anxiety counseling?

06

The Heard Counseling provides therapy services but does not prescribe medication. If medication may be helpful as part of your care, we can collaborate with your physician, OB-GYN, or psychiatrist to support coordinated treatment.

Many women benefit from a combination of postpartum depression counseling and medical support, depending on their individual needs.

Do you offer antidepressants for postpartum depression?

05

Yes. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be a helpful approach for addressing the negative thought patterns that often accompany postpartum depression. CBT focuses on identifying and shifting unhelpful thoughts while building healthier emotional and behavioral responses.

At The Heard Counseling, CBT may be integrated with other approaches to provide holistic postpartum support, addressing both emotional patterns and the broader mind-body experience of postpartum recovery.

Postpartum depression is a treatable condition, and many women recover with the right combination of support and care. Counseling can play an important role in helping mothers process emotions, build coping skills, and restore emotional balance during the postpartum period. It is important to take into consideration the role of hormones in the postpartum period and how a natural imbalance in hormones after giving birth can play a role in postpartum depression. At the Heard Counseling, we take into consideration the root cause of postpartum depression and how physically supporting the body can help with treatment for postpartum depression. This may include movement, nutrition, and supporting and increasing the production of oxytocin and other hormones.

Through postpartum depression counseling in Miami, many women begin to feel more connected, supported, and hopeful as they move through recovery and adjust to the challenges of new motherhood.

Is there a cure for postpartum depression?

03

The baby blues are very common and typically occur during the first couple of weeks after childbirth. They often involve mood swings, tearfulness, and emotional sensitivity as hormones shift.

Postpartum depression, however, tends to last longer and may include persistent sadness, difficulty bonding with your baby, loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, overwhelming guilt, anxiety, or feeling emotionally numb. If these feelings continue or begin interfering with daily life, working with a postpartum depression therapist in Miami can help you receive the support you need.

How do I know if I have postpartum depression or just the "baby blues"?

02

Yes. In addition to offering postpartum depression counseling in Miami and Coral Gables, The Heard Counseling provides online postpartum counseling throughout Florida. Virtual sessions allow new mothers to receive support from the comfort of their home during an already demanding time.

Many women appreciate the flexibility of online postpartum counseling, especially while adjusting to life with a newborn. Virtual therapy can provide the same thoughtful care and emotional support while making it easier to attend sessions during early motherhood.
