Insurance
The Heard Counseling is Out of Network
At this time, The Heard Counseling therapists do not work directly with insurance companies (see below for details about why).
Why don’t we bill insurance directly?
Reason #1 Why We Don’t Take Insurance | It Doesn’t Allow for Therapy to Be Confidential
Insurance companies often require that your personal files or information is disclosed to a 3rd party insurance or technology company. This can increase the risk that your information is accessible to others or leaked. It is also possible that in the future if your job requires a federal background check that the mental health diagnosis that you received in therapy can be released because your insurance company had that information. We find success in therapy is founded on the importance of confidentiality and safety, and often insurance can not offer that.
Reason #2 Why We Don’t Take Insurance | You Have to Receive a Mental Health Diagnosis
Many times clients that we see do not have a mental health diagnosis, that means a medical diagnosis that is in the DSM- Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Such things that are not in there are relationship problems and issues after postpartum. In order to get coverage with your insurance you have to have a mental health disorder in the DSM. Even if you don’t have a mental health diagnosis, it is required in order to get coverage. We don’t agree with this policy at all and wish that everyone could get access to mental health services through their insurance.
Reason #3 Why We Don’t Take Insurance | We Can be More Attentive & Effective
Taking insurance requires hours and hours of reviewing paperwork, imputing reports and data, which would take up most of our time. Since we do not take insurance, time that would of have been spent on insurance goes to offering quality care to you. This means that we continue to receive training to offer the best quality of care, read the latest research, connect with resources and respond to you in a time sensitive manner. This allows us to be a top quality provider. We know this is frustrating and we wish things were different. This is why we are so passionate about health reform on a systemic and national level.
Reason #4 Why We Don’t Take Insurance | Insurance Decides What Help You Need
Insurance companies decide how many session you receive and how often. Even if you feel you still need help after their allotted and approved treatment sessions, they might not approve you for more. This can be very dis-empowering for clients, leaving them in a crisis mid treatment. We think it is really important for our clients to decide what is best for them, with the support of their therapist.
Together with your therapist you get to decide on your treatment and not a system that knows nothing about you personally. You are not a number but a individual with unique needs and desires. If something changes in your life, like the loss of a loved one, we can shift our focus to grief counseling without requesting and waiting for approval.
The Investment of Therapy
Therapy is an investment. It an investment of your time, an investment of your finances. It takes a lot to change and finding the right resources, such as the right therapist with specialized training and years of schooling, requires an investment.
We wish things were different, we wish health care covered these costs for mental health services and allowed mental health practitioners to get reimbursed a reasonable wage, but we are not there in the United States. We need more health care reform.

We will look at patterns of behavior, the meanings around the problems, the impact of the problem, the systems at place that are allow for the problem to take place. We will address the impact this problem is having on you and briefly look at your family dynamics.
Sometimes this will overflow in the second session as well. In the second session we might continue to elaborate on what was discussed in the first session and transition our focus to finding solutions and co-constructing change.
Third session, we continue unraveling and developing the new strategies and solutions and address how the solutions are working or not working in real life.
60 minute Therapeutic Feedback & Reflection Session
Here we review progress and changes. We talk about what is working, what still needs work and the plan on what to do if the problem or pattern of behavior arises again.
