3 Tips to Help My Anxiety
If you are like 99% of America, you’ve struggled with feelings of anxiety at one point in your life. And what’s more likely is that you’ve struggled with anxiety multiple times in your life, or even chronically. Anxiety can be one of the most difficult struggles to manage because it is often associated with stress and can be completely crippling. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be! Anxiety can be managed through diligence and dedication, and the trick is to catch it before it gets to a level that is debilitating. Anxiety is a progressive issue. This means that it starts small, may be just a casual “feeling” every once in a while. It comes and goes, and you think it’s managed, you’ve got it under control. That casual “feeling” can quickly turn into something more and before you know it, you are having a hard time staying afloat. If you have found yourself in this position before, if you are starting to experience that casual “feeling”, or if you are in the throes of anxiety – here are a few tips to try and get some relief!
Take a Deep Breath…
When anxiety is starting to creep up – you can feel overwhelmed and like you can’t keep up. Allow yourself to slow down and take a big deep breath. Remember that you are in control, and you can manage these feelings! Take some time to write down some of the things that are contributing to your anxiety and stress and prioritize those things. Take each thing, one by one and come up with some solutions to better manage the stress of each individual item – instead of viewing it all as one large thing to be overwhelmed by. Break it all down and figure out one at a time, how you are going to manage or resolve those stressors.
Identify Triggers and Implement Relaxation Exercises…
Take some time, after prioritizing your stressors, to try and identify some of the triggers of your anxiety. For some people, it is simply stress in general. For others, it is being around their family, or the holidays. Everyone experiences anxiety “triggers”, and everyone’s anxiety triggers are different – but it is important to learn to identify those triggers because then you will know when to implement relaxation techniques such as, yoga, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, etc. Once you have figured out that a trigger for you is the holidays, or meetings with your boss – you can begin to implement relaxation exercises before the trigger, so that you can tackle to trigger with a clearer mind and calmer body!
Be Kind to Yourself and Get Help if You Need It…
Being kind to yourself seems so obvious, but it’s probably one of the most neglected aspects of confronting and working through your anxiety. Being able to work through your anxiety requires a lot of mental and physical energy – energy that you need to actively pursue renewing! Be kind to yourself means, practice self-care! Do things for you, that make you feel good! That may mean reading a book, it may mean going out to eat with friends, or maybe it means going to get a massage. Whatever self-care looks like to you – do it! But the bottom line is, that sometimes self-care means recognizing that you need help and accepting that help from a professional! Seeking the help of an anxiety specialist can be incredibly rewarding and can set you up with helpful tools to take with you for the future.
