You’re Worried about your Teenager

As a parent, you want what’s best for your child. You want them to be happy, and you hope they will have the skills to deal with life’s challenges when they arise.

Lately, you’ve been concerned about your teen’s mental health and emotional state.

Maybe, they mentioned that they have been feeling down or having sad thoughts. Or, they never leave their room. Perhaps, your teenager is sleeping more and is more “argumentative.” It is hard to have a conversation with them without conflict arising.

Perhaps, you’re not the only one noticing these changes. Maybe, a teacher has mentioned to you that they are concerned about your teenager, that they have been acting differently at school. Or their grades are suddenly falling.

Regardless of the reason your teen is struggling, it’s hard for you to watch. You’re so worried about them. More than anything, you want them to come to talk to you about their problems and worries. But, every day they seem more distanced.

At The Heard Counseling, we help teenagers to feel themselves again so they can feel confident facing life’s many challenges.

How do I talk to my Teen about Counseling?

This is a question we often get from parents. We advise that you have an open conversation with your teenager about counseling. During this conversation, you should share your genuine concern for their well-being. Try to avoid placing blame or trying to find a reason for their behavior. Then, ask your teen what they think about therapy and listen to their response. Try telling them that you want to support them in this journey of feeling better and believe therapy can be a great tool to help them. You might even want to share this page with them so that they can check it out for themselves and learn more about our therapists.

We encourage you, parents, to reach out to us and set up a free 20-minute consultation with us. During this time, we can answer any questions you might have for us. This will help you can get to know us and figure out if we might be a good fit to help your teenager and your family. We are here to support you as your teen begins counseling.

What is “Wrong” with my Teenager?

As a parent, this may be the first question you ask yourself when your teen starts acting differently. Perhaps, your teen is spending more time in their room alone, and less time with you as a family. They are acting different and always on their phone. You don’t know what is happening and every time you try and ask your teen if they are okay, they say everything is “fine.”

You’re constantly searching for answers as to why your teenager is behaving so strangely lately. It is peers at school, is it the pandemic, is it online schooling, is it hormonal changes, is it the pressure of having to succeed in high school, and worries about applying to college?

You are unsure if counseling for teens is right for you and your family, but you want things to be different. You want your teen to be like they used to be, happier and more focused.

Together we will discuss your perspective and your understanding of the situation so as to be able to consider the parental perspective. We value the input and perspective of different family members. So, we often welcome other family members in the sessions if we feel it is helpful and beneficial for your teen.

Common Mental Health Issues Teens Experience

Teen Anxiety:

Teenagers often describe feeling anxious. They have intrusive or scary thoughts, trouble sleeping, feelings of overwhelm, racing heart, shortness of breath.

We teach ways to help calm the nervous system and restructure thought patterns. This allows your teenager to feel a sense of physical and mental calmness.

Teen Depression:

Teenagers who are experiencing depression often experience mood changes, not wanting to see friends anymore, change in weight or appetite, a constant feeling of low mood, and a lack of enjoying things that used to make them happy. Just to name a few symptoms. There are many psychological, social, emotional, and environmental factors that play into the development of depression. But, we can help your teen feel better and overcome the distress they feel.

Identity Issues for Teenager:

The teenage years are a time of constant change and exploration. Teens question who they want to be, who they want to be friends with, what is important to them, what they will do after school, and who they really are. Many times during this process of identity searching, a crisis can develop feelings of rejection, fear, and shame. It can be important to support them through this process in a safe way.

Academic Pressure:

Many teenagers feel very overwhelmed with the pressures to succeed academically in high school and beyond. It can feel like their whole life depends on how well they perform academically. Which can have a tremendous impact on their mental health. When that happens, a counselor can help them prioritize what’s important in life, so they can create a better school-life balance.

Peer Relationships:

A huge part of being a teenager is their relationship with their peers. It often impacts the way they view themselves. Sometimes peer relationships can negatively impact the mental health of your teenager. Especially if they experience bullying or peer pressure. When your teen is struggling socially, they may feel like their whole world is ending. A therapist can offer them help and support as they process their feelings and social challenges.

Hi! If you’re on this page, odds are you or your parent are considering teen therapy. But, you are not sure if therapy is right for you. You’re dealing with a lot of things right now. Maybe, you’re having scary thoughts, or feel a lot of pressure from your friends, teachers, and parents. And, you think you may need that extra help. You want things to be different. So. maybe a counselor could help?

We want you to know that we value your trust. We understand that in order for therapy to work, you have to believe that we will keep what you say private and confidential. Even before we start therapy, we will briefly chat and discuss exactly how privacy works between you, your parents, and us, teen therapists in Miami, FL. For Parents Considering Counseling for Teens in Miami, FL & Online in Florida

As a parent, it’s painful to watch your child struggle. You want them to be happy and to succeed in life.

You realize that your teen has their own values and opinions about what they do and do not want. Therefore, they have a clear idea about who they generally like, who they get along with, and who they can trust.

Although you may want to choose a therapist for them, we encourage you not to. Find a few options for them and involve them in the process of selecting their therapist. Research shows that it is important that there’s a strong connection between the teen therapist and the teen in. This helps therapy to be helpful.

A Note on Privacy:

Parents have the right to be informed about their teenager’s process in therapy. At the same time, without the guarantee of confidentiality, trust between your teen and their therapist may not happen. If you teen feels that they cannot trust their therapist, then they are unlikely to develop a sufficient relationship and therapy is unlikely to be successful.

It is important for teenagers to have a “zone of privacy” so can discuss personal matters without fear that their thoughts and feelings will be immediately reported to their parents. This is particularly true for adolescents who are naturally developing a greater sense of independence and autonomy. For this reason, we will respect the confidentiality of your child or teen, unless they are a danger to themselves or others. Then, I will communicate this information to you and refer them to other mental health care.

If you choose to begin counseling with us, we will talk about what to expect at the beginning of the therapy process so everyone is aware of our confidentiality policy.

The Heard Counseling’s Approach to Counseling Teens

At The Heard Counseling, we find it important that your teenager feels like they can trust us. For that reason, we want them to know that we are not here to judge them, or tell them what to do. We have worked with a lot of teenagers, so there is very little that any teen could say that would shock us. Our goal is to truly listen to what the teenager has to say and create a safe place where they can share what is truly going on. Together, with your teenager and the teen therapist, we will explore ways to help your teen cope with the challenges and struggles they are facing. We will tap into their strengths, their resources, and offer them a few tools to cope with their distress. We view the teen and the teen therapist as partners and collaborators. This means we work together to find solutions to their concerns.

We also find it really important that a parent or parents are involved in the therapy process when it’s appropriate and needed. The teen therapist will always check in with the teenager to ask what they are comfortable including their parents. Additionally, before we even begin working with a teen, we discuss how we handle privacy and confidentiality. This ensures everyone is on the same page and has clear expectations of what the therapeutic relationship will look like. Trust and confidence are important aspects of the relationship between the teen and their teen therapist.

Common Questions about Teen Counseling

Will my insurance cover counseling for teens?

Unfortunately, we do not take insurance at this time. There are several reasons why we don’t. One of those reasons is we value confidentiality. Often insurance requires that you provide your medical notes and records. These records can go through many different hands at the insurance company. Another is, in order to be covered by insurance you have to receive a psychiatric diagnosis. At times, a diagnosis does not always fit the clients we are seeing.

We understand if you would like to go through your insurance and happy to connect you with other practitioners who do accept insurance.
