Does Marriage Counseling Actually Work?
As a marriage therapist I often hear or even get asked if couples therapy actually works. I can understand why it would be important to know the outcome of therapy. In today’s world we constantly want to know if this product, this service, will be worth our time. As our lives get busier, we want to ensure that we invest our time in something that is worth it. On top of that, we want to know if therapy is a good financial investment.
Is Therapy Worth the Money?
Money is an important topic but something that we don’t talk about often enough. They say the three things you should never bring up at a dinner table is money, religion and politics and that is for good reason. Money is a very emotional topic. There are societal expectations, shame, cultural aspects and more that accompany the topic of money. So is therapy actually worth the money?
For us we understand that if our relationship or marriage is in crisis and turmoil, it impacts every area of life. If you are not happy in your marriage, you feel that permeate you own self-confidence, your work life and even your relationships with your children. On the opposite spectrum, if you are happy in your marriage it can profoundly impact your own mental health, the mental health of your children and the success in your career and life.
The health of your marriage has a huge impact on every aspect of your life and for that reason we do believe that it is valuable and worth the investment of time and money.
What is the Success Rate of Couples Therapy?
This is a good question. The next question to answer that question would be what do you define as success? For some couples, success means coming to a decision to break up. For some couples, success means improving their communication and fighting less. However, there is research that shows that couples therapy and marriage counseling using the Emotional Focused Therapy approach has shown to have a 75% success rate. It is important to then think about what factors contribute to success in couples counseling. Having worked with many couples, I have noticed patterns in behavior that contribute to change.
What Factors Help Success in Couples Counseling?
In my experience there are a few things that can contribute to success in couples counseling. The first, is if both parties of the couple are invested in change. This means that both parties want to change and own up to the fact that they play a part in the dynamic in the relationship and the marriage. If one partner doesn’t believe that the process might be helpful, then that partner can be checked out and all work rests on one member of the couple. This can be extremely hard and results can be hard to achieve.
Another factor that contribute to the success in marriage counseling is if both partners are hopeful that they can change and there can be change. If there is no hope that one of the partners can be checked out of the relationship and it can be hard for things to be change.
Another factor is the level of self awareness that each member of the couple have. It is common for one member of the couple to have more self-awareness but if there is a drastic difference and the partner that is less self-aware is not willing to be self aware it can impede the process of therapy and change.
