There are so many questions that might go through your mind as you try and find a therapist. Maybe you are not sure if therapy is right for you, you and your husband, or your teen. You having been going through endless lists of therapists on Psychology Today or google and not sure how you are going to choose your therapist. It seems like there are a lot of therapists in Miami but how do you know which one will be a good fit for you or your teenager?

Choosing a therapist isn’t always easy. These are a few things to think about and things that are importance to consider when choosing a therapist.

Connection with Miami Therapist

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a therapist is if you will connect well with the therapist. The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important aspects of therapeutic success. If you do not feel comfortable and safe with your therapist then therapy cannot be effective. It might be important for you to consider what aspects of a therapist, or a person, makes you feel comfortable. Is it the gender of your therapist, their experience, their approach, how they speak, whether they are straightforward or more timid? Therapists are just like regular people, they each have their own personality and characteristics that make them uniquely them. It might be helpful to set up a consultation or chat before your first session to see if you enjoy talking to them and so you can get a better idea of their personality. We always offer a free 20 minute consultation as we understand how crucial a good fit and connection is to therapy. After the conversation, ask yourself if you felt comfortable talking to that therapist. Would you want to speak to them again? How did you like their approach? You might even ask them when you are on the call how they would describe their style or approach to therapy. Listen for any words that you like, or words that you would rather not hear.

Therapist Training and Specialization

There are many therapists in Miami, Florida and each therapist is unique in how they approach their counseling practice. When searching for therapists you might want to look at what kind of therapist they are to have a general idea of what their training is. If you are looking for couples counseling in Miami, then you might want to look for a couples counselor, or a licensed marriage therapist in Florida, look for the initials “LMFT” behind their name. Not every counselor has had training in working with couples. If you are looking for a therapist for your teenager in Miami, Florida, you might want to look for a family therapist in Miami, because when working with your teenager it can be important to incorporate the parents into the treatment. If you are looking for a therapist for postpartum depression, it might be important to look to see if the therapist has specific training in postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety. It also helps to look at the service pages to see if the therapist has a specific page for the type of therapy that you are looking for.

Does the Miami Therapist Offer Online Therapy?

More and more therapy is going virtual and online. Our practice offers online therapy in Florida. Many times our clients want the option of doing online therapy just in case there is one week where they can not make it to the office, or if they do not want to go to the office because they want to reduce contact with people- during the pandemic. We find that online therapy can be a very convenient way to go to therapy. There are many online therapists in Miami, but you want to look for one that offers therapy on a HIPAA compliant platform- not Facetime. You want to ensure that the therapist values your confidentiality and security. If you talk to a therapist before starting therapy in an initial consult, you might ask they what platform they use for online therapy and if it is HIPAA compliant.

Age and Gender of the Therapist

For many clients, the age and gender of the therapist is important. This might be for many reasons, but you want to ask yourself, “who would I feel most comfortable with?” Would I feel more comfortable talking to someone who is older, in a different generation, or would you feel more comfortable with a therapist who is a similar age. If you are looking for a therapist for your teenager you definitely want to consider the age of the therapist. Will your teenager be comfortable with someone who is younger rather then older? It might also useful to ask your teenager who they would feel comfortable with.
