How to Choose A Couples Therapist in Miami
It is important to know that not every therapist in Miami or elsewhere offer couples therapy. To be able to offer Couples therapy and Marriage counseling the therapist must go through extensive specialized training in understanding how to manage individual problems in the realm of couple dynamics. In Miami there are many therapists that offer couples therapy and even more now that offer couples therapy online in Florida. If you are looking for online couples therapist in Miami or online in Florida it can be overwhelming. Know that you are able to see any Couples therapist or Marriage counselor through telehealth that resides in your state.
It is great that you have options when looking for a couples therapist, however, it can be overwhelming as you start to navigate who might be best for working with you and your partner in Marriage counseling in Miami. How do you choose a couples therapist or marriage counselor? Here are 5 things to think about when choosing a couples therapist in Miami or couples therapist online in Florida.
How to Choose A Couples Therapist
For a few quick ides it is recommended that you think about the following aspects when considering a couples therapist in your area:
1. Physical Location
2. Does the therapist offer Telehealth
3. Are they a Marriage and Family therapist
4. Cost and Insurance Coverage
5. Will they be a good fit for yourself and your partner
Consider #1 for Choosing a Couples Therapist in Miami or Couples Therapist Online in Florida: Physical Location
It is really important that you know that the couples therapist that you are working with must be located in the state that you reside in. That means that if you live in Florida then your therapist must be licensed in Florida. They could live in another state but they must be licensed in your state that you live in. It is okay if you live in Miami Beach and your therapist lives in Pinecrest, Miami or Coral Gables if you are willing to do online couples therapy and they are licensed in Florida.
A lot of my clients wonder if it is important if the therapist physically lives close to your even if you are doing online couples therapy. The answer to that is it depends. If you always want to do online couples therapy then it doesn’t matter if the therapist lives in Key Biscayne and you live in Midtown Miami.
However, if you maybe want to explore in-person marriage counseling in Miami in the future then you might want to consider if they have a physical office and where that physical office is compared to where you live. Most of the couples I work with much prefer online therapy and have said that they want to continue to work online with couples therapy in Miami because it is just so much easier. Marriage counseling is a commitment and you want to make the logistics of getting to therapy as easy as possible. As a Miami therapist I understand the hassle of Miami traffic so I see the immense benefit of working online with your couples therapist.
Consideration #2 for Choosing a Couples Therapist in Miami: Does the couples therapist offer Telehealth
You want to make sure that the therapist offers online counseling if that is something that you might want to explore now or in the future. Thanks to the pandemic most couples therapists are working online now. You also want to check if your Miami therapist is comfortable working with people online and if she will continue to offer online counseling services as we transition back in in-person therapy sessions.
Consideration #3 for Choosing a Couples Therapist in Miami: Are they a Marriage and Family therapist
So what is a Marriage and Family Therapist and how can I tell if my couples therapist is a Marriage and Family therapist. So a marriage and family therapist is a license in the state of Florida and it means that they have got their masters or doctorate degree in a program that heavily focuses on teaching couples therapy. This might be a little controversial as there are great couples therapists that are not marriage and family therapists, but I would strongly recommend that if you are looking for a couples therapist in Miami or in Florida that you ask the therapist if they are a Marriage and Family Therapist. Personally, I will only work with a Marriage and Family therapist if I personally would need a couples therapist and I only recommend a couples therapist that is a marriage and family therapist to other people
You can tell if a therapist is a marriage and family therapist by if they call themselves that and if they have the letters, LMFT behind that name. LMFT stands for Licensed marriage and family therapist. There are many couples therapists in Miami but I would first filter by their license.
Consideration #4 for Choosing a Couples Therapist: Cost and Insurance Coverage
It is important to know that most insurance companies do not cover couples therapy. This is because in order for insurance to cover therapy and counseling there needs to be a medical diagnosis and there is no medical diagnosis for couples. Knowing that, it will be important for you to consider the cost of the couples therapy.
Note that the therapists at the Heard Counseling are not “in network” with any insurance companies. There are many benefits to choosing to not use an insurance company. We understand the huge burden that can be put on a family when having to pay for couples therapy in Miami but it can be a huge investment that is so worth it when you see the changes you want in your marriage.
Consideration #5 for Choosing a Couples Therapist in Miami: Will they be a good fit for yourself and your partner
Research shows that one of the most important factors in determining the success in couples therapy and individual therapy is the relationship you have with the therapist. For couples therapy it is important that both members of the couple feel comfortable with the Miami therapist. At times there will be moment where one partner will feel like the therapist is aligned with them over the other partner, but in general you want to feel that the couples therapist is supporting the both members of the couple.
If you are concerned that you or your partner will not feel comfortable with the couples therapist, make sure that you ask the couples therapist questions related to this. Ask them how they make both members of the couple feel comfortable or how they address arguments. Come with questions that you might have related to being a good fit. A good couples therapist will be able to answer these questions with ease as a good couples therapist understands how to navigate the dynamics of a couple and how to ensure that both parties feel comfortable.
