What are the benefits of online counseling for teens

Teenager on her laptop is participating in counseling for teenagers in Miami, Florida because she has anxiety and is working with a teen therapist at the Heard Counseling in Miami, Florida

A lot of parents of teenagers, and even teenagers themselves, are unsure about participating in online counseling. As a parent, you want the best teen counselor for your teenager and you want to ensure that therapy is actually going to work. I can imagine how challenging it might be to find the right teen counselor and then decide between in-person counseling or online teen counseling. Maybe parents are unsure if online counseling is as effective as therapy that is in person.

Personally, I have found that online counseling for teenagers has been just as effective and there are even many benefits to online counseling for teens. I am not the only one who also see the benefits. Many teen therapists and teen counselors also agree that there are many benefits to online counseling.

This week I reached out to fellow teen therapists and teen counselors all over the country and asked them what benefits they see in online counseling for teens. This is what they had to say:

Online Teen Counseling Reduces Issues of Transportation

“Online therapy takes away all of the transportation headaches for arranging for your teen to come to counseling! For clients who aren't yet driving, you no longer have to worry about a parent being free to drive them to/from sessions. For teenagers who do have a car, you don't have to worry about what to do about their appointment when there's bad weather you just aren't comfortable driving in. Online counseling just makes it easier to get your teen to their appointments on a regular basis.”

It is Easier to Build a Relationship with a Teen In Online Teen Counseling

“Online therapy can be a quicker way to get to know a teen, which can allow the therapist to build a relationship more quickly. The teen can give a tour of their bedroom, show their therapist the family pet, or talk about the poster on their wall. The therapist can use this in really helpful ways and those ways aren't as easily accessible as when the teen comes to the therapist's office. Online counseling for teens can actually, in some instances, be the best way to build a relationship!”

-Stephanie Korpal, M.Ed., LPC from  www.marblewellness.com

“Teens are so savvy and comfortable with electronics. Online therapy makes it very easy to engage them in watching videos about anxiety, how their brain works, or practice relaxation techniques in a less intimidating way.”

-Melissa Mellon, LMFT from www.moxiefamilytherapy.com

Online Counseling for Teens is more Comfortable for Teenagers

“If home is a safe place, online therapy may be more comfortable for teens who are hesitant to begin therapy. The teen may be able to access a furry friend for love, or snuggle in a favorite blanket, while engaging in therapy.”

 -- Cathy Sullivan-Windt Ph.D from . www.newconnectionscounselingcenter.com

“Online counseling literally meets teens where they are at. Teens are most comfortable at home in their own environment. They are accustomed to video technology, and we find Telehealth sessions to be just as effective as in-person sessions.”

-       Jennifer Kruse, LPC—S from www.thewellhousesouthlake.com

Online Counseling is Great for Teenagers with Anxiety

“It might seem weird to talk to a therapist online but it’s just like FaceTiming with your bestie...but with a lot more chill. Seriously, though, online counseling is awesome for teens who struggle with anxiety and going to an office (especially for the first time). Give it a go, you’ll be surprised at how easy and chill it is.”

Online Teen Therapy Allows you to Work with Teenagers in their Environment

“One of the benefits of online counseling is being able to do real time interventions in the moment because you are able to work with the teen in their environment. My anxious teen clients can take actionable steps while in your in session and provide feedback to me and we can process what is happening for them at that time.”
